📢 What’s the New Rule?

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has revised its regulations, allowing students to pursue two degrees in a single academic session. What’s even more significant is that this rule will be applicable retroactively, even for degrees obtained before 2022.

✅ This means students can now hold:

  • One regular + one distance degree
  • One regular + one online degree
  • Two degrees via distance or online mode
  • Even two online degrees

🚫 Note: This rule does not apply to M.Phil or Ph.D. programs.

📜 Previous Rules vs. New Policy

📅 Year🔒 Old Rules
2012Only one diploma or certificate via distance mode could be taken alongside a regular degree
2020One regular + one distance/online degree allowed; two regular degrees not permitted
2022NEP approved two degrees, but ambiguity remained about implementation
2024✅ Now officially recognized — two degrees allowed in one academic session, even retroactively

🎯 Who Benefits from This Policy?

  • Students interested in multi-disciplinary education
  • Working professionals wanting an additional online degree
  • Aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, or other competitive exams who want a backup degree
  • Learners exploring new fields like Data Science + Public Administration, or Law + Business

This decision supports flexibility and multi-disciplinary education as per the vision of NEP 2020.

📌 UGC Guidelines at a Glance

  • Two degrees can be earned simultaneously if class timings do not clash
  • Students can opt for:
    • Regular + Distance
    • Regular + Online
    • Distance + Online
    • Two Online Degrees
  • The policy applies to past and future sessions

✅ What Should Students Keep in Mind?

  • Ensure the universities are UGC-recognized
  • Maintain time management between the two programs
  • Make sure you obtain valid documentation for both degrees
  • Institutions may require you to submit declarations about non-overlapping class timings

📣 Final Thoughts

UGC’s move to recognize two degrees in a single academic year marks a progressive shift in Indian higher education. It empowers students with more flexibility, cross-domain expertise, and better career opportunities.
