B.Ed Course to Change: One-Year Program Returns from 2026

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has announced a major change in the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course. From the academic year 2026–27, the one-year B.Ed program will be reintroduced for eligible candidates.

Key Updates

• The one-year B.Ed will be open only to candidates with a four-year undergraduate degree or a postgraduate qualification.
• Those with a three-year bachelor’s degree will continue to pursue the regular two-year B.Ed.
• Standalone B.Ed colleges will have to merge into multidisciplinary institutions as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
• The new syllabus will focus more on practical training, internships, and modern teaching methods.

Why the Change?

The two-year B.Ed, introduced in 2014, faced issues like repetitive coursework and low enrolment. The NCTE aims to make teacher training more efficient, flexible, and career-focused, especially for candidates who already hold higher degrees.

• Check if your qualification (4-year UG or PG) makes you eligible for the one-year course.
• Choose NCTE-recognised institutions only.
