💬 What’s the Update?
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has introduced a system that allows candidates who cleared the UPSC Mains but didn’t make it to the final list (after the personality test/interview) to still be considered for government jobs in selected departments and ministries.
This move aims to utilize the talent pool of deserving aspirants who narrowly missed out on getting a civil service posting but have already demonstrated strong potential.
âś… Who Is Eligible?
- Candidates who cleared the UPSC Mains Exam
- But didn’t qualify in the final merit list after the interview round
- Must be part of the Reserve List or considered “fit” by the Commission
🏛️ Where Can They Be Recruited?
Government departments (outside IAS/IPS/IFS) may request UPSC to:
- Share names from the Reserve List
- Recommend eligible candidates for posts such as:
- Assistant Section Officers
- Research Analysts
- Technical & Policy Posts
- CAPF or allied services
- Think tanks, NITI Aayog, etc.

- Every year, hundreds of candidates miss out by just a few marks.
- These candidates have already undergone rigorous testing—Prelims, Mains, and Interviews.
- The new system gives them a second chance to serve in government roles without wasting a whole year.
